Product Designer - PetSmart

PetSmart is seeking a Product Designer with 3-5 years of professional experience to join their Proprietary Brand Product Design Team.

This role will be responsible for designing and developing innovative solutions for a variety of product categories; particularly dog and cat toys. As a Product Designer, you’ll participate in trend and market research and be responsible for translating those learnings into fun, creative, and unique product designs which you will take from concept stage to sample stage.

This work requires a creative thinker with a passion for design who is able to effectively communicate their ideas and receive feedback and who is comfortable working on several different projects at once in a fast-paced corporate environment.

Candidate will work under the supervision of the Product Design Director and collaboratively and cross-functionally with Buyers, Product Development, Product Integrity, Packaging Design, Marketing and Legal departments to ensure objectives are met. Also, key to this role is a positive attitude, ability to receive feedback and love of learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conceptualizes multiple creative solutions and design options to address project strategies and product needs within given cost parameters
  • Manages multiple projects at a time from concept through pre-production and oversees the full scope of deliverables, including design specifications and technical drawings
  • Drives innovation by following the latest trends and using those learnings to develop creative concepts that translate into production-ready 3D products
  • Supports product design team by participating in competitive retailing, developing trend and concept boards, being flexible and providing support on all projects and product categories
  • Communicates and presents designs to cross-functional partners and all levels of leadership
  • Works closely with cross-functional partners to provide adequate information and/or sample feedback to overseas partners
  • Attends, participates /presents in weekly design meetings; aligning and preparing content for design reviews
  • Collaborates with cross-functional partners, including product development, buying, legal, and product integrity teams to make sure objectives are met
  • Travel:  Up to 25% including international trips 

QUALIFICATIONS and technical skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Toy Design or related field
  • 3-5 years professional experience designing and developing products for mass production
  • Strong sketching, brainstorming, ideation skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in 3D CAD programs such as AutoCad Fusion 360 or Solidworks, PTC Creo is preffered.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite – particularly Adobe Illustrator
  • Ability to translate 2D artwork into specification via AI format for production
  • Ability to create 3D CAD files that can be used in the production of prototypes and samples
  • Basic knowledge of mass manufacturing techniques in soft and hard goods, such as metal stamping/casting, plastic injection, and blow molding.
  • Willingness to learn and receive feedback from colleagues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively present information to all levels of leadership.
  • Great time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be highly detail-oriented, a self-motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Character Illustration skills and/or experience designing toys (plush and/or molded) is a plus

 EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Toy Design or related field
  • 3-5 years professional experience designing and developing products for mass production
  • Experience working in a team-based environment with good interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with overseas vendors and travel to Asia is a plus
  • Intermediate knowledge of mass manufacturing techniques in soft and hard goods
  • Basic budgetary adherence experience and an understanding of material costs
  • Experience with a PLM and/or workflow management system is a plus
